kitchen paper towel holder, let us discuss the various types available. As their name suggest the former one has a base structure attached with a central rod like structure where you are supposed to place your paper towels. The latter ones are more like the toilet paper roll holders screwed to a wall. What we will be doing is creating a French country antique paint finish kitchen paper towel dispenser. All that you will need is:
- Old plain wooden Kitchen Paper Towel Holder.
- Roller Paint Brush.
- Primer
- Bright or Royal Blue Paint & Sunny Yellow Paint or Terra Cotta and
- Blue Paint
- A variety of 2 inches, 3 inches, or 4 inches paint brushes
- Wood stain
- Glaze
- Sandpaper
- Drop clothes
The reason why we choose an old plain kitchen paper towel holder is because they are best suited to it. Get yourself a basic one, maybe one that you have discarded a while back and still happen to have it in your kitchen. Paper towel holder does not need a whole lot of effort. Just follow these easy steps:
Step 1
Sandpaper the plain kitchen paper towel holder till its surface gets a little smooth. Remember to dust it off with a dry cloth. You can use either an old t shirt or any other cloth that servers the purpose.
Step 2
Apply the primer on the smoothened surface. This is primarily to make the paint, etc stick to it. These two steps become all the more important if you are using an old kitchen paper towel holder. Leave it to dry. Remember, only when it is completely dry move on to the step.
Step 3
This is a vital step. What you need to do is put a layer of base paint on your dried half-complete kitchen paper towel holder. Be careful of the combinations that you use. This color is not going to be the final color of your holder but one that compliments the final color. I recommend two combinations – yellow as base and blue as the upper coat or blue as the base and terracotta as the upper coat.
Step 4
Once prepared the way explained above, your to-be new kitchen paper towel dispenser is ready to be painted with the final color. So take your brush and get on with either blue or terracotta, as per applicable and give it a new look. Let it dry.
Just a note here, don’t panic to see your kitchen paper towel holder taking a very bright color. This will be mellowed down in the following steps.
Step 5
This is where you begin antiquing your kitchen paper towel holder. You will need to use a sandpaper to rough up the edges. You want to do so over areas that are commonly used over time. The purpose is to give it an old look – a worn out look. Use your visualization to decide which parts of the kitchen paper towel dispenser is used more than the rest. This will expose he inner coat and as per the color you picked.
Step 6
Once convinced that your kitchen paper towel holder is ready to be a complete fit in your kitchen, dust it with a cloth, maybe the one that you used in Step 1.
The following step is for beautifying your newly created kitchen paper towel dispenser. If you are satisfied with the way it looks now that is fine, you do not need to proceed any further.
Step 7
Darken the kitchen paper towel holder with a mixture of glaze and wood stain. Mix it up in a plastic container. Take an old white rag to wipe it over the surface of the paper towel holder.
Continue with this till you are satisfied with the antique look. And once done you have your own inexpensive, antique kitchen paper towel holder.
Also try to use some antique looking embellishments, easily obtainable at your local home improvement store. This will give kitchen paper towel dispenser a better look, if you look from the perspective of antiquity. Hope this helps you to make a kitchen paper towel dispenser that you have always wanted to have – a rustic antique piece.
